What are the best outdoor landscape satellite speakers and 2020 buying guide.

Updated: Apr 14

What are outdoor satellite landscape speakers? These outdoor speakers are completely enclosed with a spike to plant them into the ground. Outdoor Satellite speakers are great for planting in gardens and along the perimeter of your landscape. Many of these types of speakers are prone to breaking off from the stake. This depends on how tight is was torqued during the initial install, how careful the landscapers are and if the speaker can move in the ground if hit. If you plant them in a rockier area they will not have as much flexibility as when they are planted in a grassy or dirt area. These speakers can be powered by a regular amplifier or 70v amplifier. If your setting this up with a traditional amplifier you will need to run a wire directly from your amp or receiver to each speaker. If you will be using a 70 volt system you would only need to run a pair of wires, in a loop while connecting to each speaker. Use caution as the 70v wire is a higher voltage and can emit a small shock when touched. We recommend trenching PVC pipe to each location and where the speaker wire will enter the home. Burying the wires will prevent them from being exposed and damaged. The PVC assures maximum protection and makes it very easy to replace the wire in the future or easily add other wires should you need outdoor Wi-Fi or outdoor TV cables. Make sure the polarity of the wires (positive to positive and negative to negative) are connected properly for the best experience. Reversing these will cause lack of bass with poor overall sound quality and possible distortion.

How to choose and care for your outdoor satellite speakers: Outdoor satellite speakers are like indoor speakers with the ability to be camouflaged throughout your landscape and are of course weatherproof. Because they are completely enclosed the mid driver and tweeter are properly tuned to the enclosure for maximum performance. We recommend bringing them in during the harsher months, but these speakers are design to be left outside all year round. If you decide to store your speakers you can easily pull them out of the ground, just make sure you label the speaker wires before disconnecting. You can also cap the outdoor speaker wires (separately) if they will be exposed to the elements. Although these speakers are weatherproof you will still want to protect them as much as possible. Pointing the speakers down or keeping them under thick brush (not blocking the speaker) will keep direct sunlight off the speaker surface and rubber surround. The sun can dry these components out over time depending on how long they are exposed. Water can also enter or collect on different parts of the speaker which can also be avoided when aimed down or covered during installation. You should also do some research and make sure the brand you are purchasing come from a reputable manufacturer.

What size outdoor satellite speaker do I need? Satellite outdoor speakers come in many different sizes. Larger speakers with a 6” driver will deliver better lower frequencies giving your outdoor sound much more emotion and depth. Satellite speakers are also available in 2.5”, 3”, 4” and 5” speakers . When planning on outdoor speaker location you will want to place them evenly to obtain a uniform sound field. We have all been somewhere, where the speakers were to loud in one location and too low in another. To have optimal sound around an area you should space the spears 1 foot apart for every inch of the speaker. So, if you have a 6” speaker they will approximately cover a 6 foot area, your next speaker would then be mounted approximately 12 feet away (6 feet around each speaker). Because outdoor speakers are completely enclosed, they are a directional speaker. Directional meaning whichever way point them will be the direction the sound travels. You may want to consider an outdoor subwoofer if your using this type of outdoor speaker system. You can read more about outdoor subwoofers here. Here are a few of our top choices for outdoor satellite landscape speakers.

$25 Monoprice Outdoor 2.5-inch Satellite Garden Speaker (Pair) - Sycamore Series/ These are the cheapest outdoor satellite speakers you can buy.

  • True 2.1 System: The subwoofer employs a 2-way, 12db crossover at 200Hz, so it uses all frequencies below 200Hz and sends all frequencies above 200Hz to the satellite speakers.

  • Heard Not Seen: With the body of the subwoofer and the speaker wires buried in the ground, the system fills your yard or patio with great sound, while maintaining a low profile that doesn't look out of place in your yard.

  • Easy Install: Rather than needing to run separate wires from the amplifier to each speaker, only a single, 4-conductor wire needs to run from the amp to the subwoofer, then a shorter pair of 2-conductor wires run from the sub to the satellites.

  • Modular: The system is designed to be extended by using additional subwoofers and/or satellite speakers. Need more bass? Add another subwoofer. Need more coverage for a large room? Add another pair of satellite speakers. It doesn't get any more simple than that.

  • Great Sound in the Ground: Enjoy rich and full sound in your yard or patio. The buried subwoofer and low profile satellites keep the focus on the sound, not the sights.
